WHALE
WATCHING

If you’re coming to Hervey Bay between July and October,
here’s the short version:
the whales show up… and they don’t rush off.

This stretch of coast is one of the few places in the world where humpback whales stop, rest and hang out for a while instead of just cruising past. Which means you’re not squinting at a distant splash – you’re right there, watching them play, roll, breach and generally behave like absolute show-offs.

It’s a bit magic, honestly.

WHY IT'S SO GOOD HERE

Aerial view - location

Close to nature

JUST 4 MINUTES' DRIVE TO THE MARINA

YOUR HOME BASE FOR ADVENTURE  🛥️

Hervey Bay isn’t open ocean – it’s calm, protected water. So instead of clinging to the side of a boat wondering about your life choices, you’re actually enjoying yourself.

It’s also where you’ll often see:

  • mums teaching their calves the ropes (very wholesome, 10/10)

  • curious whales popping up to check you out

  • big, dramatic breaches that make everyone on the boat lose their minds.

There’s a reason this place gets called the Whale Watching Capital of Australia – it earns it.

At the Grange Resort, we're local, so we can help you choose the best tours – and arrange pick up right outside. Easy.

What a day looks like

JUST 4 MINUTES' DRIVE TO THE MARINA

YOUR HOME BASE FOR ADVENTURE  🛥️

Most tours head out daily during the season and run for a few hours. You’ll get:

  • plenty of space to spot whales (no shoulder-to-shoulder squish)

  • guides who know their stuff without sounding like a textbook

  • snacks, drinks and a decent chance of saying ‘did you SEE that?!’ at least 47 times.

And sightings? Very likely. (Often guaranteed!) This isn’t a ‘maybe if you’re lucky’ situation.

YOUR HOLIDAY, YOUR WAY

HERE'S THE RHYTHM WE LIKE

Here’s the rhythm we like:

Whales in the morning → back to the resort → swim, nap, drink, repeat.

No rushing. No overplanning. Just a genuinely good day.

If you’re here in season, whale watching isn’t a ‘maybe’ – it’s a don’t-miss.

And the best part? You’re staying close enough to roll out, head down to the marina and be back by for the afternoon like nothing happened…except you just saw a 40-tonne whale launch itself out of the water.

Casual.
